The Picnic
(July 1986)

1.
An unending noise;
many voices murmuring,
uncomfortably.

2.
Required encounter
of the old guard and the new.
Tight knots of people,

3.
between hearty bites;
ply other human ears, while
smoothly making rounds.

4.
Sublime comedy
is going unrecognized
in summer beauty.

5.
Men in the making;
new players learning the plays,
uncomfortable.

6.
Boys, only older;
self-conscious in their plight.
Wishing for day's end.

7.
Warm breeze continues,
yesterday and tomorrow.
Sun climbs to zenith.
