Sleepy Time

Martha Everhart Braniff hails from Houston, where she writes fiction, poetry and essays. Her short story, "Resurrection," published in HAPPY literary journal, was nominated for the 2002 Pushcart Prize. Her suspense novel, "Beds of Broken Glass," was a finalist for the Bellwether Prize.

At your house
I get to sleep
on the cot made up
especially for me,
in your room,
near your bed-
a safe place.

I want to crawl
beneath your musky
housecoat,
to see the thin skin
of your bra, slack
under the weight
of aging breasts,
to ask protection
from your daughter-
the one they call
my mother.
